Five Powerful Shifts for Navigating Life’s Currents

“Is this even mine?” – Jennifer Hough

Life can often feel like a whirlwind, with responsibilities piling up and change constantly knocking at our door. As leaders and visionaries, we’re expected to navigate these choppy waters with grace and poise. But let’s be honest – sometimes it feels like we’re barely keeping our heads above water.

I recently returned from a much-needed vacation, seeking some breathing room from the demands of life. It got me thinking about how we can create lasting shifts in our approach to overwhelm and change, rather than relying solely on temporary fixes.

The Root Causes of Overwhelm

Before we dive into solutions, let’s explore what’s really at the heart of our overwhelm:

  • Perception of ability: We often take on more than we believe we can handle. Notice the emphasis on belief – our perceived limitations aren’t always accurate.
  • Unrealistic timelines: We commit to deadlines that don’t align with our true capacity or priorities.
  • Rapid environmental changes: From global events to family dynamics, our surroundings are in constant flux.
  • Perfectionism: The relentless pursuit of flawlessness can be paralyzing.
  • Suboptimal delegation: We struggle to entrust tasks to others or tap into our greater consciousness for solutions.
  • Chronic fight-or-flight: When we’re stuck in survival mode, creativity and problem-solving suffer.

Shifting Your Relationship with Change

Now, let’s explore some practical approaches to transcend overwhelm and embrace change:

1. The Power of a Simple Question

When anxiety creeps in, ask yourself: “Is this even mine?”

Often, we absorb worries that aren’t truly ours to carry. By discerning what’s within our sphere of influence, we can release unnecessary burdens.

2. The Zero Point Reset

This powerful technique helps recenter your awareness and create mental spaciousness:

  • Bring your awareness behind your eyes, shifting focus inward.
  • Visualize a centrifugal force pushing all external pressures away from you.
  • Spend at least three minutes in this state, allowing new ideas and priorities to emerge.

3. The A to E Exercise

This method helps prioritize tasks and align your energy:

  • A tasks: Energize you, you excel at them, and you enjoy doing them.
  • B tasks: Somewhat align with your strengths and interests.
  • C tasks: Don’t energize you or align with your skills.
  • D tasks: You strongly dislike and drain your energy.
  • E tasks: Completely misaligned with your abilities or role.

Focus on maximizing your A tasks and finding ways to delegate or eliminate lower-priority items.

4. Create Buffers in Your Schedule

Build in five-minute breaks between tasks to clear your mental slate. This simple practice can dramatically improve focus and reduce overwhelm.

5. Question Your Commitments

  • For tasks that don’t energize you, ask:
  • Does this really need to be done?
  • Can the timeline be adjusted?
  • Is there someone else better suited for this task?
  • Are there tools or resources that could make this more efficient?

Embracing a Thriving Operating System

While these tools are valuable, the ultimate goal is to shift your entire paradigm.

By understanding the laws of physics and neuroplasticity, we can cultivate a mindset where change becomes an opportunity for growth rather than a source of stress.

Remember, we are creative beings by nature. The world is designed for constant evolution, not stagnation.

When we align ourselves with this truth, we can flourish amidst change rather than merely survive it.

As you implement these strategies, be patient with yourself. True transformation takes time, but the rewards of a life lived with greater ease and purpose are immeasurable.

By making these shifts, you’re not just managing overwhelm – you’re rewriting your relationship with change itself.

xoxo Jennifer

I’ve been feeling funny lately… how about you?

Interestingly, many sensitive individuals I know, and even some who don’t consider themselves sensitive, have shared with me that they’ve been feeling a bit off lately. It’s like there’s something in the air, but they can’t quite identify it. This isn’t the first time I’ve felt this way; I also experienced it after the big solar eclipse in April.

Often, the things that affect me aren’t as obvious as arguments with my partner or the neighbor cutting down trees. Consider that the changes in our world, the wars, conspiracy theories, and the pervasive fear create an environment of unrest. Even if you didn’t watch the debate in the United States, and even if politics isn’t your concern, I assure you, it’s impacting the collective human environment.
