Below is a response to my friend Kat, who has the most gorgeous farm, where she takes metaphors from nature and writes her newsletter every week. This time, her musings were about passion flowers. She’s a biologist and a botanist, and the newsletter was absolutely stunning—it inspired me deeply.

Strangely (and hilariously), I found myself inspired by Poison Sumac/Ivy/Oak instead… thanks to her. Here’s what I wrote back:

Hey lovely…

What a beautiful message to receive today.
Thank you.

Your email took me on a journey. I’m currently nursing a poison sumac situation… and what’s wild is witnessing the calm with which I’m navigating it, knowing full well that in years past, I would’ve been freaking out or anxious.

But this time? I’ve been brought back to a deeper state of calm and self-nurturance, not from emergency itchy-scratchy mode, but from using this rashy burn as a gentle redirect toward gratitude… for all of nature …including the part of me that has strong boundaries like the plant that kissed me with its repellent.

I appreciate a strong boundary, LOL. I appreciate people who let me know where they stand.

And I appreciate the reminder about my own “divine intolerances”—you know what I mean? That sense of standing for nothing less than what a divine child of the infinite can play with in her life… not with rigidity, but with the knowing that it can always evolve to something even better.

So, I’m off to sprinkle baking soda on my squash now—to redirect the powdery mildew that insists on staying. Can you blame it? But I’m gently asking it to move on through my actions… with a little leaf bath and baking soda water.

A garden is such a great metaphor. Sigh… It is also yummy.

With much love and deep appreciation for your words… and for passionflowers (which, by the way, I took last night to help me sleep),

Jennifer

P.S. Here’s a photo of a baby squash from my garden… it’s on the vine as we speak. Didn’t think you’d want to see photos of my oozing rash, LMAO!

With love,
Jennifer
